Short 'n' Sweet

My friends, P and R, are as tall as me and have their periods. They say tall girls get them earlier than short girls. Is it true? And what should I do if I get it at school?

-Becca

Hey Becca! Getting your period is always tough and totally confusing for every girl. I remember how scared I was when I was waiting but I think I had the opposite problem. Mine came waaay before everyone else and I was the shortest person in my grade! And still am.

But not to worry, I can help explain a few deets for you. Each girlie’s height doesn’t actually play into when they get their period. Your friends, P and R, come from families that are naturally tall. It’s just in their genes. It’s how they are supposed to look and develop. And their bodies are simply maturing at a different pace than your own if they have already gotten their periods.

Every girl’s body grows differently based on genes, physical activity, diet, environment…there are hundreds of things we do and things that surround us that affect the way our bodies develop. It’s all okay though. Our bodies just all mature at different rates. It is the same thing for the boys, too. Ever notice that one guy in science class with the really deep voice? Yup, he is ahead of the pack, too, just like P and R.

Soon enough, if not already, you will notice that you are slowly developing breasts, and growing underarm and pubic hair. You may even have a bit of a growth spurt or put on a few pounds. None of this is anything to be concerned about. It is just your bod getting ready for a new stage in life. Don’t worry about the changes. They are au natural!

It would be helpful to stay prepared at school just in case of an emergency on that day you chose to wear those new white pants you bought for spring. Keep a few extra pads or panty liners in your locker or backpack. Throw them in a spare pencil case so no one has to know you are carrying them around. If you are caught off guard, ask P or R for a li’l help until you can make your way to the school nurse. They are always there and have already been through it.

Getting your period, or not getting it yet, is def not something to feel down or scared about. Every girl can relate to feelings of nervousness.

Until then, don't fret and be happy with your height. Good luck!
