Wearing a scarf to school

I'm starting high school next year and since I am a Muslim, I have to start wearing a scarf to school. I am really nervous because I don't know what other people will say and how they will treat me. My parents try to help, but I don't always find their advice helpful since they went to school in Pakistan.

Please help!

High School Jitters,

Hey girlie, starting a new school is always suuuper scary. The transition from middle school to high school is already such a scary step. It’s not easy having to leave those friend-filled classrooms that you’ve grown to know and love. At such a scary time like this when all you want to do is blend in, I know you must be worried that having to start wearing this scarf will just make you stand out.

Because your religion and culture is part of who you are, and part of what defines you, I can see how serious your problem is. You should not be ashamed of who you are or where you come from. So many people have things that make them feel different and separate from the rest of their classmates. Just because you are wearing something new doesn’t mean you are a diff person or should be treated any differently. Don’t be ashamed of your uniqueness…embrace it and make the most of it!

I know you must be scared about how the peeps at school may react to your new look. Sometimes people can respond to things in negative ways simply because they don’t understand a sitch. When strangers ask you about your clothing, don’t clam up. Give them a cool and fun fact about your background. Once people get a better grip on your culture and know where you’re coming from it should be easier.

But what if people do tease you? If anyone treats you any differently just because of your clothes, they’re immature and not worth your time. Chances are you already have a lot of pals from middle school who know that you’re going to be changing up your look. Vent to your BFF and use your buds as a support system. If people do tease you, take it to a teacher. You deserve respect!

High school is a great experience. Get excited, join lots of clubs and embrace who you are. You’re gonna do great. Keep your head held high, girl!
