What does this discharge mean?!

I have a really weird thick yellow discharge and I am sooo embarrassed! I’m also really scared.

I’m 14 and I haven’t started my period. My cousin is 12 and has already started her period. My mom is freaking out and saying, “What if you can’t have kids?”! Is the weird discharge causing me to not start my period?

I’m too embarrassed to talk to my mom or a doctor. Please, please, please help!

Hey girl!

First off, you're totally normal! Period or not, girls get discharge and continue to have it for the rest of their lives. Depending on the time of the month and even your age, discharge will change. It can be a variety of colors (yellow, white, clear) and consistencies (thick, runny). These types of changes are normal.

Dealing with mama

Your mom shouldn’t start freaking out about you not being able to have kids (because it’s totally NOT true). Some girls start their periods later (I knew a girl who got hers when she was 11 and another who didn’t get it until she was 16). Your discharge doesn’t mean a thing. The next time your mom comments please be brave and tell her how you feel.

Is there a prob!?

Discharge is just another part of puberty and it can come in all different textures and colors. The only time you should be worried is if your discharge comes with a burning or itching sensation (and you’ll know it!) or if it smells unusually fishy and strong. When you've got discharge like this, don't freak but please see a doc ASAP so you can fix the prob. You might have a yeast infection, which is easily cured by meds.

And don't be afraid to talk to your mom, a doctor, even the school nurse about anything that might concern you. Your body is developing and changing, so new things are happening and if you have questions, ask away. Moms and doctors have all been in your same situation and often have more factual info than friends or the internet. But remember, this happens to everyone. As long as you don’t have any warning signs (itching and odor) than you have nothing to stress about, sistah.

Xoxo,
Liz
