Why am I so scared?

I get scared a lot for some reason. I have no idea why. I don’t watch or read anything scary. This only started happening a couple weeks ago.

For example, at night I have been getting really scared and not been able to sleep. And then I just start crying like crazy. And my head just brings up different sad events that in life that have happened to me like losing my grandpa. I just freak out and cry myself to sleep.

I just can’t stand this anymore. It’s bringing me down.

Hey babe! I’m so sorry to hear you’ve been crying yourself to sleep because you’ve been reliving sad events. You shouldn’t be afraid to go to sleep at night, but it’s normal to go through phases in your life where you feel scared and sad.

Counting sheep…calmly

It’s important, especially because you are a teenager, to get a good amount of shut-eye every night. However, if you are crying yourself to sleep and are scared at night, chances are your sleep isn’t great. Try to pin down exactly what is making you scared or worried.

Write it down

At some point in the day, write down sad concerns and events that you can’t stop thinking about. Pour it all out. This might help you feel calmer. Just don’t do it before ya hit the hay—thinking about everything right before you sleep might drive you crazier.

Talk about it

Often, talking about what is bothering you with someone you trust, such as a sibling, friend or parent, can help you deal. Having someone who is able to relate to the loss or the feeling of being scared will make you feel less alone. And don’t be shy about talking to a guidance counselor. They’re pros, and they can definitely help you feel at ease again.

Relax right before bed

Try to take a hot bath or do some meditative yoga before sleep to calm your body and mind. Drink some chamomile tea, listen to soothing tunes or read a good book. If you are in a relaxed state before bed your mind will be relaxed and you might not get so scared.

Remember, these feelings won’t last forever and there are ways to get rid of feeling so scared. Don’t be afraid to ask for help and try different things until you find something that works for you. Good luck.

Xoxo,
Liz
