Ever gaped in awe at the super-impressive competitors on So You Think You Can Dance? Get ready to shape up like a dancer.

GL intern (and ballerina extraordinaire) Megan Parker spilled a fab ballet-inspired stretching routine to up your flexibility and make you feel amazing. Whether you’re a ballerina babe or sports chick trying to get toned, check out our five fave toning moves (no barre required!).

The Flexible Frog
Fab for stretching those hips! Lie on the floor on your belly, with your legs in an “V” shape behind you. Keeping your legs wide, bring your feet together, until the bottoms of your feet touch. Make sure to keep your hips on the floor. It’s okay if your feet don’t touch! Keep working toward it. Hold the stretch for a minute.

The Leg Blender
This move will get any girl’s legs in perfect skirt-wearing shape. Lie on your back and raise both legs in the air. Cross one leg in front of the other while keeping ‘em straight. Point your toes and start switching your legs back and forth as quickly as you can. Keep going after your tummy and legs start feeling that oh-so-good burn. This will work your legs and your abs. Repeat for two minutes.

The Heel Stretch
Stand up and hold onto a chair. Reach down and grab the arch of your foot up against your heel. Now hoist that limb up as high as you can, while you balance on the other leg. Hold for 20 seconds and repeat on the other leg.

On Point
This one needs to be done with a partner, so round up your bestie or a sib. Sit down with your legs straight out in front of you. Point your toes as much as you can. Have your partner hold onto the tops of your feet and gently press down on them to stretch your toes towards the floor. With a little practice, you’ll be able to get your toes to almost touch the ground!

Wall Splits
This stretch is great for all types of athletes. Jazz dancers, soccer players, swimmers—you name it. Sit down facing a wall, with your legs as far out to each side as possible. Now scoot, scoot, scoot closer to the wall, until your heels touch it. Keep inching your torso closer towards the wall, while your feet are stable against it. You should feel this stretch in your inner thigh and hips.

Hey girl, whoa there, before you start taking a crash diet, realize you ARE beautiful and girls come in all shapes and sizes. Don't sweat the numbers -- your body is growing and dieting is only gonna hurt it, not help it. My suggestion, however? Get active. Add a little reg exercise to your routine. You'll look and feel your best. Remember, girlie, you're amazing and you're NOT fat. You're gorgeous. Take it day by day and you'll be beyond okay, I promise! And that diet book? Leave it behind.

Hey girlie! Yes, intense stretching (yoga) will help you stay fit. And squats and lunges works for thighs!

MOD MOD MOD MOD MOD i have a quick question on this article Smile i've done all the other ones except the heel stretch. that one confused me majorely. but then i read it again (w/out the chair part) and i notice (if you've ever seen or done this/other cheer moves) its a leg lift. a normal, plain leg life. you know grab the bottom of you foot and bring it up so your crotch shows like to the side. i think that's it. right? is it? thanks!

ANyway, I hav a flat and toned stomach, but my thighs and legs are really muscular from seven years of horseback riding and they are hard to get jeans for. Im 13 and barely 5' 1'' so I am short for 1s but my thighs are good inthem. wat are some ways to thin my legs? and would this exercise help? thanks


 


Sounds to me like you keep yourself in shape and you have a FIT, muscular, body!!   Most girls would want to trade places with you!!! Cardiovascular exercise: jogging, elliptical, swimming, yoga and pilates will keep you in the great shape you are in, and also great lean muscle!

Hey babe! Depending on the dots it could be sun damage. Only a dermatologist would know for sure! Try asking a parent if you can go see a derm and get it checked out to keep your skin healthy!

MOD MOD MOD this is going to be long but i rly need help! so yesterday at my birthday party my friend got a number given to her by the ticket person. she broke into tears and said she felt sick because she was so creeped out. and then she started going off about how 2 people had asked her out in one day and that she was so upset cause she has a boyfriend and really LOVES him. we're 13. and she says she loves him. he lives in delaware.(we're in CT) and then she was like ohh over the summer 9 guys asked me out and they were older. (she was still crying) and then she said: You don't know how hard it is to be pretty. You don't know. isn't that like calling me ugly? I think she was just doing it to take the attention off of me on my birthday.

 

 

Sounds to me like your "friend" has some issues with insecurity?!  Her comments are negative and a TRUE friend does not put her friends down with comments like the one above!  Remember, she's the one with the problem, not you!!!  I'm sure you are not ugly, and don't put yourself down.   Girls that have to always have the attention on them are lacking alot in their lives and because they are insecure, try to put make other people feel inferior.   Keep your distance from this girl and hang out with other girls that are more confident and make you feel more positive about yourself!

MOD my coments seem to never get posted. and i post them like 3 times. so i was wondering what stretches i could do to lose weight and look toned but keep my curves.

 

I prefer lounges, bicycle crunches, and push-ups. These exercises all tone, but sculpt sexy curves at the same time. The twisting in ab exercises creates a smaller waste, letting your curves stand out!

Dress like a disaster! Don't match, wear tacky clothing. (Neon colors are great!) Anything that doesn't go together, it doesn't have to have a rhyme or reason as long as it looks totally OUT there and bazar! Good luck, and have fun putting together your outfit!

MOD! I'm a dancer, I have been doing dance for 8 years now. We do the Heel Stretch in dance and after 8 whole years I can still only get my leg to about as high as my chest, a few girls can get it straight above their head! What can I do to master the move so I can get MY foot above my head?! I'm a great dancer my techer says but I think if I could do that I would be a lot better. THANKS!!!!! Laughing

 

The best way to increase flexibility is to practice and STRETCH! Next time you're watching TV or just lounging stretch out your legs, practice your split, and GOOD LUCK! You go girl!

Workout for you babe! Not just for a boy. Boys will come and go, but YOU will always be there! That's awesome you want to get healthy and exercise!  It's all about personal preference, but if you don't have any equipment the best exercises in my opinion are:

Cardio: Running, grab your sneakers and GO! Sports, if you're on a sports or dance team you've already got your cardio!

Strength: Push-ups and bicycle crunches. Lounges work too!

Hey chica, when doing wall splits you are really trying to stretch your legs, so you are trying to get as close as you can to the wall so your legs will spread out further.

MOD_MOD_MOD_MOD_MOD Thanks for helping me! One more question: last year I really really liked this guy in my LA and SS class. I caught him staring at me a lot, and sometimes i stared back to see if he'd look away, but since he's the confident type, he didn't. Once when I sat at his table with this one other girl who he's friends with, there was one old and worn thesaurus, and two in good shape, newer version ones. The girl and him both took the newer ones so I took the old one and he said I could have his and when I asked if he was sure he said yeah. Did he like me???!!!

I'm not really good at making conversation, and I don't really like small talk. This year my locker is right next to his, and I just don't know how to proceed. What should I do? I think for the second exercise you're not supposed to move your hips towards the wall, just your torso, so you're still sitting on the ground, but it sounds like you're already pretty flexible!

You're showing a lot of signs that usually happen before you get your period, so probably but it's impossible to predict exactly when. Just carry a pad with you whenever you can so you'll be prepared no matter when it happens!

i dance and some of those stretches won't help unless you're a dancer or a pilates with good technique training as far as you pelvis goes. the first one (the frog) doesn't do anything for me and it never has. for the one with the abs put you hands behind you head and take your whole shoulder blade off the ground to get a good burn. i would also flex my feet instead of point them. The arch one is kind of pointless if your not a dance, since normal people don't point their feet! lol! for the wall splits, i would start out on the floor, but and legs straight up against the wall, put them into your side splits, but keep your muscles as relaxed as possible so gravity can pull them down for a better stretch, so dont clench them

I do dance we do all of these except leg blender and on point. There's other ways to stretch against the wall too that work well. If u lay on ur back with ur butt against the wall and ur legs laying open in ur middle split (upside down) that helps stretch u out and open ur hips.
Another one that helps is standing with ur butt and the back of ur leg(s) against the wall with ur hands resting on the floor. Then put one of ur legs up straight on the wall and push urself against it with ur hands. Without the wall this is called a ponche (but probably spelled differently). To someone one else it'll look like a side ways split. I would only recomend this if u r already pretty flexible.

I'm a dancer and i know that these all really do help, but instead of having somone hold your feet for the on point one you can also stick them under a couch or something and lay down if you dont have someone to hold your feet.

I do these stretches in dance and they work REALLY WELL. i have another good stretch for your abs:

1) lie on your back on the ground.
2)lift your legs from the ground (completely straight and together)
3) lower them slowly towards the ground DO NOT LET THEM TOUCH THE GROUND
4) hold them there for a count of 8 and lift them slowly
5)repeat this 10 times and you will feel the burn. Increase the number of times and the amount you hold it for for an even better ab exercise

NO NO NO! THE FLEXIBLE FROG IS BADDDDDD FOR YOU! It messes up your knees and actually stretches you the WRONG way. I dance and ALL of my teachers tell us this b/c a lot of people still think this stretch works. And a few months ago my professional dance magazine ran an artical about how the "frog stretch" is bad if you do it laying on your stomach (like the one they are showing here).
