15 ways to make major moolah this summer

Check these out, too...

  • I wanna...train tigers!
  • 13 songs to shake the winter blahs
  • Should you tell him how ya feel before school ends?
  • Find a job this summer! Step one: Ready your resume
  • 16 fun in the sun summertime dates
Sick ‘n’ tired of pet sitting and lemonade stands? Can’t deal with another late-night babysitting gig? Try these fresh ideas for making moolah this summer, no matter how old (or young) you are!

Go artsy
Summer is the season for community fairs, festivals, carnivals and block parties. The most successful gatherings offer up entertainment for all ages, and that means tots, too! If you’re artsy, try setting up a face painting or fake tattoo stand. Sell your designs for a few bucks and have a blast!

Be a helping hand
If you’re in a rural area, many farms and stables will hire tweens and teens to help take care of animals and keep the farm tidy. Stuck in suburbia or a city? Offer your fix-it or cleaning services to your neighbors.

Design diva
Put your computer skills to good use by designing flyers for parties and community yard sales, birthday invites and holiday greetings. Be sure to account for all of your costs, including printer ink, when you decide on your prices.

Long live summer camp!
If you’ve been attending the same camp for years, it’s a good idea to speak to the director about becoming a junior counselor. While you might not get paid, you may get a discount or a free session of camp. Ask Mom ‘n’ Dad if they’d be willing to deposit the money saved into your bank account.

Clean it up
The worst thing about pets? You’ve gotta clean up after them! This idea certainly isn’t glamorous, but we’re betting people will pay some serious bucks to avoid scrubbing their cockatiel’s cage or ridding the yard of puppy poo. Add on refilling bird feeders and birdbaths, and you’ve got yourself a money-making operation.

Set up a car wash
Decide on a few hours one or two afternoons (or mornings) a week for your summer-long car wash biz. While neighbors could drive to the nearest one, having you nearby is an easy alternative, and probably cheaper than a bigger business. Offering cookies and lemonade will keep ‘em comin’ back week after week.

Shop ‘til ya drop
If you’re located in a city or small town where you can walk or bike to a variety of local stores, consider becoming a personal shopper. You can pick up groceries, drug store sundries, dry cleaning and other miscellaneous items for busy folks on the go.

Bake sale
Speaking of cookies, if your goodies are gettin’ famous, why not put ‘em up for sale? We love the idea of setting up a treats-in-a-hurry biz. Customers can email their orders (say, a tray of brownies for a party the next day), and you can whip them up in time to take the fiesta. Homemade hostess goodies without the hassle? Perfect-o!

Pool party
Many pools and gyms offer concession stands that need to be manned by someone, so why not you? Inquire to see if they have any openings and if you’re old enough to man the register.

Clowning around
Wanna have a blast this summer? Grab a couple of friends and form a troupe of clowns. Practice your gags and physical comedy before marketing yourselves as the birthday party entertainment of choice.

Do you deliver?
Some businesses around town, like pharmacies and restaurants, might be interested in hiring you as a delivery girl. Similarly, offices and store managers who can’t go out for lunch would love to be able to hire someone to bring food in. If you’ve got a bike, you should be set for local deliveries.

Go green
As the temps soar, homeowners are taking to turning on the sprinklers. Offer to water houseplants and move the sprinkler around while they’re at work, so that they can come home to a lush green lawn.

Child’s play
For a twist on typical babysitting gigs, try holding a summer school for kids in the morning. You can alternate get-‘em-moving activities like dance and sports with a story hour to keep things educational and active.

Painting princess
The summer months are ripe for home renovation projects, but oftentimes people start working on something and never finish. A helping hand could be all that’s needed to finally scrape off that peeling dining room wall paper or freshen up the patio furniture with a coat of paint or a quick stain.

Think freelance
There are a lot of little odd jobs people and small companies need help with, from writing up newsletters to designing websites. Take stock of your skills, head to an office supply store to print up flyers and business cards and ask your parents to spread the word.

Okay, these ideas are great and all, but I have an EXTREMELY overprotective dad. seriously--i can't even go for a walk on my own (btw, I'm homeschooled, too)! I really want to buy a laptop (never owned 1 b4) but idk how to make the money.
Help, please!!!
Katnip

Hey girl, try showing this list to your dad and talking to him about ways you can start to save up your own money. Talk to him about how you want to learn how to be responsible with money and asking politely if you can start now! Be mature about it and you might be able to convince him. Good luck xx

So I am going to start a business with a lot of these ideas... This may seem like a stupid question but I will ask it anyways. WHat should I name my business? Here are the things I am doing. Making homemade sodas, making bake sale items, dogsitting, and babysitting. So what should I name it?

 Hey girl,

The name of your business is less important that what you're actually doing, so don't stress over it too much! You can always just use a variation of your own name. Straightforward is better than clever, anyway!

I love all of the ideas, but I live in a town that is more tourestie then normal neibors, is that a plus or a minus? I am going to take a babysiting course at the end of the summer because I have been offered some jobs by people my dad works with, but until then, how do I make money? I am only 11 so most places wouldn't, because they can't, higher me.

okay i scammed through these ideas... they would be perfect be4 we moved, but now we live in the country, and have horses, none of our neighbors have dogs, or leave their house, we live like 50 ft away from the freeway, so i cant do stands, we dont have any kids younger than me, and im 13, we cant set up a car wash, because our street is a very narrow street, 1 car per lane, cant do face paints cause we live in a hidden street that a lot of people miss, and ya know, dont have a bike, closest place is John Ash, all our neighbors are old 40+ except the people down the street in the mansion whos kid is 13+, if there was more, maybe itd work...idk... OK, I looked through these and none of these seem to work for me. But I need to make some serious $$$!!! My friend is trying to brainstorm with me, and she said I could ask my parents about getting money for chores, but my mom's been super worried about fiance lately, and when I brought it up, she seemed aggrivated. So I can't do that. I'm only 12, and there's not much to do for me. Any ideas??? Thanks!!!!
~Love, Me~

Hey girl, petsitting and housesitting are great ways to make some money in the summer. I'd ask around and see if your neighbors need anyone to get their mail, water their plants, etc. while they're on vacay.

Also im 11 but im pretty mature.Do u think i could babysit? Thx!Smile <3

Hey girly,
Those sound like great ideas. If you did partner with a friend, unfortunately you would need to split the cash. If you don't think this is going to work, go online and look up some festivals or public events that you can set up a stand nearby. Also, if you are interested in babysitting, I would recommend taking a course from the red cross or something like that before trying it out. Good Luck!

MOD MOD MOD MOD MOD MOD MOD
Hi, first of all I want to say to all the girlies out there who want a babysitting gig to keep trying! I had to spend weeks making flyers and printing them out from place to place and spending day after day after school passing them out with my friends in playgrounds, parks and sidewalks. I had to work really hard.It wasn't until now that I finally got..3 GIGS!
Anyway, back to MOD!
As I said, I have 3 gigs. The first one is babysitting a 15 month old full time child Mon-Fri for 8-9 hours. The second one is babysitting a 1 year old, starting ASAP and ending august 5 days a week (Mon-Fri) 9am - 3 or 4pm. She would be driving her to my house so it would be much easier and she takes 2 naps during the day. The final one is looking after 3 school aged girls. Basically, the mom can't afford camp for 3 kids, so she wants me to plan lots of fun activities during the day. I would be earning $225 a week. What do you think? Which job should I accept?

Hey babe,

It depends on what you're looking for out of your job! First, do you know any of these families better than another? Then, ask yourself: Do you want an easy time? Do you want something that will teach you about kids, patience, creativity? Do you want to be able to talk to the kids and relate to them? Are any of these going to be more flexible than another (if you are sick or go on vacation)? You have three VERY different choices here, so try to make a list of what your expectations are for your job. Then, you can make your decision based on that Smile Either way, you'll have a fun (but challenging) summer with these kids - but you'll get experience and a great salary for it! Good luck!!

MOD, Im 12, and I was thinking of selling my photography to people as an easy way to earn money. I print my own photography at my house, on real photo paper so it does look proffesional. Do you think this is a good Idea or is there a chance no one will buy it. I was also thinking of buying frames to put the photography in but this would raise the cost extravagantly.

Hey babe. I think that best way to try this out is to fill a cheap album with your pics and show it to potential customers. This way, if you don't get any takers then you haven't lost anything (you've gained a fab showcase of your work).

MOD! MOD! MOD! So this summer, I want to make some extra money. I can't get a real job until next summer, so I wanted to do odd jobs and stuff (like making scrapbooks/flyers but also babysitting). The only thing is that I have no idea how to get customers! My parents don't really want me hanging up flyers around the town, either. What should I do? Thanks!

Hey girl. Word of mouth is really powerful. Ask your rents to ask their co-workers if they need help (this works well for babysitting) and talk to your friends and their rents.

MOD MOD MOD I'm 11 years old and I really want a job of some sort.I am very mature for my age. I have wanted to babysit for ages but I'm not sure if I'm old enough or not.

Hey chica,

Do you have any cousins/neighbors with kids? Even a friend with little sibs? Approach them and tell them you've been thinking about babysitting, and you were wondering if you could spend some time with their kids to see if you're ready for that. It's a great way to prepare - and a great way to see if you have the patience/maturity to take on such an important job Smile

I really want to do the child's play one, but how do I get some customers? And also, how many children should be in one class, it's only me doing it.

Hey girl!

Start by making some fliers to hang around your neighborhood, or ask your parents if they can ask around for you. You should begin by having about 5 children, but if you feel comfortable maybe increase by a couple more. Hope that helps! x0x0

These are great ideas! I really liked the designer diva one, because I've always been great at making flyers and brochures! There's a community site where you can distribute your services, and a woman replied saying she'd like me to make a catalogue of her products. It will be roughly 20 pages. I can manage to do that.
I was wondering, how much should I charge for designing a catalogue of 20 pages? And what's next? Should I email her with questions about certain things, like what her products are and what exactly she would like the catalogue to look like? Or would it be more productive and professional if I met up with her?

Hey girl!

E-mailing and meeting her in person are both professional, so it just depends on what you feel most comfortable doing. No matter what you decide, you should definitely have some contact with her to see exactly what she expects from the catalogue and if she has any ideas for it.  As for payment, see how much she had in mind, or decide how long it will take you and figure out the payment based on the amount of hours you spent on it. Good luck! x0x0

Since there is nothing for me to do in the summer, I want to make money in an easy way, besides getting a real job since i'm only 13. My family is moving soon and I want to make money to buy stuff for my future room! (: I know my parents will pay, but I don't want to spend all their money. Are there any simple jobs i can do? P.s. nothing dog or animal related please because I'm scared of them and no babysitting because I don't like the idea of being left alone with some kids by myself. So.. please help me think of something i could do(:
Thanks, from ifreakinloveeyou.

Hey girlie,

Since you don't want to pet/babysit, you definitely eliminate a lot of options that usually help younger girls who can't get "real" jobs just yet. But you could still make jewelry, offer to go food shopping for elderly people who can't, or do housework (raking leaves, gardening, cleaning, laundry, etc.). You could also have a garage sale and sell some of your old toys, clothes, furniture, and other things you don't need anymore to make room for the new stuff - AND get some money to help you buy it Smile

MOD! MOD! MOD!
Hi, I was thinking of selling homemade fleece tie blankets to make money this summer (GL actually gave me the idea). I was planning on selling them online on Etsy.com or just to my friends and family. But i was wondering how much I should sell them for. I made a 5ft by 5ft one and it cost $20. Is $30 too much? Also, do you know any cheaper places i can get Fabrics besides JOAANS? Thank you!
BTW they take about a day to make

Hey girlie,

I don't know of any other national fabric stores besides Joanns, but you can still shop there for materials! Try to make a plan of the cheapest way you can get all the materials you need. Add up that cost per blanket so you make your money back, then add about $5 or $10 in for the energy/time it'll take to make one. You won't make a lot per blanket, but you'll rack up a lil profit and you'll also make people happy while doing it! Smile

Wich job(s) do you think would help me earn the most, quicker than others. I will be taking the 2 thousand to fly down and see my best friend. Thank you!

Hey girly girl! Depending on how old you are, your job choices might be limited. Lots of places won't hire you if you're under 18. So, I'd work on getting a job that you know you can get... like babysitting, or doing odd jobs for your neighbors!

But as far as baby sitting goes there are alot of kids that live on my street that i could baby sit but do i need a resume or something? I could really use the cash so any advice would be great!!!

Hey girlie! Babysitting sounds like a great idea and you def don't need a resume. Call up your neighbors and introduce yourself and let them know you're interested! Some other ways you could make money would be to hold a car wash, bake sale or yard sale -- all of these activities would be super fun and a great way to earn some cash! Good luck!

It was a really convenient job for me, since I was busy on weekdays with my own high school lax and the middle school leagues tend to have games on weekends. I can't find any jobs because i'm only 14 and many people say that i am too young and I look to young to work for them. Any suggestions of jobs where my age will not interfere.

Hey girlie! Most places only start hiring teens over the age of 16 and some can't even hire you till you're 18. Your best bet is to tell neighbors that you can babysit, dogsit, or help them around the garden. Or you could get creative and start your own business making jewelry or clothing. Check out this article: http://www.girlslife.com/post/2011/03/25/10-money-making-ideas.aspx. Hope that helps!

MODMODMOD!!!!!!
I just had a spinal fusion so I can't do a lot of work, but I have nothing to do since I can't go to school. I can walk around fine, but I can't bend at my waist or anywhere on my back and I can't lift anything over about 5 pounds. How can I earn money when what i can do is limited and a most of the people in my neighborhood are gone?
Thanks!

Hey gal!

As much as you want to work, it might be better if you rest so you don't risk injuring yourself as you heal. I can't think of too many jobs that don't require lifting or bending over Take this time to relax and get better, and many people might be hesitant to hire you if they know you are recovering from serious surgery.
