BEAUTY 911: Camouflage

What's the best concealer? How do you make it look natural? (Mine always looks fake and splotchy.) --Darcy

Hey Darc,

There are actually tons of really great concealers out there on the market right now. If you’re concealer looks splotchy and fake, most likely ya just don’t have the right color for your face. Your color should only be one or two shades lighter than your foundation. Most makeup counters and beauty stores have testers out on display so you can give it a whirl before dropping any dough. Also, don’t hesitate to ask the counter ladies and sales people for help. After all, that is what they are there for!

Check out some of my faves:

Laura Mercier Secret Camouflage, $28

This duo is great because it comes in a two-shade compact to give you an exact match. With 6 different sets, you’re sure to find the perfect color.

L’Oreal Paris True Match Concealer, $9

Comes in 9 different hues and the price can’t be beat!

Blending is super important when it comes to applying concealer and is also the best way to get rid of splotchyness. The easiest way to do it? Use your fingers! Always work with a small amount first and add more if necessary later. Putting too much on at one time will make the area look “fake and splotchy.” Lightly dab the area you want to camouflage. Still see splotch marks? Keep on dabbing. Once you’ve evenly blended out the area, top with some powder. This step will set your concealer and give you a more natural, lasting look.

Remember, concealer isn’t supposed to cover large areas of you face. It’s just used to cover dark circles, pesky blemishes and other small areas.

Hugs,
Jiae
