I’m thinking about telling my health teacher something
really big that has happened to me. It’s a terrible, awful secret. But would
she have to tell someone else about my problem?
Dear Confused,
It depends. Many secrets can be kept confidential. But if
your teacher thinks you are being hurt, could hurt yourself or might hurt
someone else, then she may be required to tell people who can help you. Some
kids really are ready to get out of a bad situation, even though things could
seem worse before they get better. Others are not quite ready to tell all, so
they may choose to make an anonymous call to a hotline (like the National
Domestic Violence Hot Line at 1-800-799-SAFE or the Covenant House at
1-800-999-9999) for info and support.
