Finding a summer gig used to be as easy
as walkin’ down to the local ice cream parlor and filling out an
application. These days, however, applications are way up and the
number of folks hiring teens seasonally isn’t what we’d call
optimal. The result? A national teen unemployment rate of 24.2
percent, according to a recent study from the
Employment Policies
Institute. And that
number almost doubles for black teens.
Washington, D.C., boasts the highest
teen unemployment rate of 48.9 percent. Georgia, Washington State,
Nevada, California and North Carolina are the top-five states with
rates above 30 percent. Whoa!
So what’s a girl to do when she’s
looking for a li’l dough? Try starting her own biz, of course!
