If you’re in charge of stocking the Independence Day dessert table with tasty, patriotic treats, you’re in luck! We’ve got five ah-dorable bites that will please every palate, whether you’ve got a herd of munchkins underfoot or a band of merry-making adults. They’re easy to whip up in advance (or the day-of), letting you get outta the kitchen to celebrate some independence of your own. Happy Fourth of July!
Hurray for the USA cupcakes
You can use the same methods seen with our pot o’ gold cupcakes to create a patriotic red, white and blue-striped cupcake for the Fourth of July. Simply divide your white cake batter into three bowls. Leave on bowl of batter plain white, and add food coloring to the other two to create red and white layers. You’ll want to divide the batter up evenly among all the cups, pouring the blue in first, then adding the plain white, then the red on top. Bake according to the box directions and voila!
Independence Day ice cream sammies
Grab two of your favorite chocolate chip cookies, place a scoop of softened ice cream in between and press together to create an ice cream sandwich. Then, roll the edges of the sandwich in a pile of red, white and blue sprinkles. You can do the same thing with a s’more—just roll the edges of the gooey marshmallow into decorative sprinkles!
Blast off! Jell-o rockets
Pick up three packages of Jell-O: One in your favorite “red” flavor (I like strawberry), one in berry blue and a third in piña colada. Follow the package directions to make the gelatin. Once each has set, cut it into small, ¼-inch blocks. Toss them in red, white and blue order into a champagne flute or tall drinking glass and serve ‘em up.
Can’t find piña colada? You can use whipped cream, mini marshmallows or unflavored gelatin mixed with sweetened condensed milk and water to make the white layer.
Dip the largest strawberries you can find into melted white chocolate. Roll the tip in blue sugar or blue sprinkles, then place on wax paper in the refrigerator to dry. Yum! Want a chocolate-covered how-to? CLICK HERE.
Forever flag cake
There’s nothing better than a decked-out sheet cake to wow a cookout crowd. Bake off your favorite vanilla, yellow cake or strawberry boxed mixed according to directions and cool completely. Then, ice the top and sides with white icing. Now it’s time for some fun! Use red, white and blue candies (we like M&Ms) or fresh fruit to create the image of a flag on top of the cake. CLICK HERE
