I have a serious problem. The boys in my class are racist. I
care about people a lot—whoever they are. I hate when someone of a different
race is being teased. What the boys in my class say is extremely rude. When I
ask them why they make fun of people of different races, they say, “Why do you
care?” I try everything in my power to make them stop, but they just keep doing
it. I can’t stand it anymore.
Dear Confused in Louisiana
You should be proud of your values and ability to empathize.
It is hard to listen to insensitive people who make racist comments are
oblivious to others’ feelings. It is also hard to change such people. I commend
you for trying and encourage you to continue pointing out that all people have
the same range of emotions. If racists would take off their blinders, they
would see there are good people and bad people of all colors. Maybe it will
make an impression on your small-minded classmates to see that slurs or stupid
jokes can lose the respect of someone as special as you.
