Now that fall’s unofficially here, we’re dreaming pretty
much nonstop of the comforting confections we can’t wait to bake up. This is
one of our favorites, perfect for a crisp afternoon, rainy day or a post
apple-picking expedition. It’s super easy, making it a natural pick for
impressing your pals or your parents. Dig in!
Ingredients:
1 refrigerated piecrust (or make your own from a favorite
recipe)
2 lbs tart apples (we like Golden Delicious), peeled and
thinly sliced
2 tbsp butter, melted
5 tbsp sugar
Optional: Cinnamon, ground nutmeg
Directions:
Prepare your piecrust as directed, pressed into a 9-inch
round pie or tart dish.
Take your thinly sliced apples and start arranging them in
an overlapping circle, starting on the outside and spiraling inward until you
reach the center. If you don’t use all of your apple slices, save the leftovers
for munching.
Use a pastry brush to cover the edges of the crust and the
apples in melted butter. Sprinkle the crust and the apples with sugar and, if
you like, with ground cinnamon and/or nutmeg.
Bake for about 45 minutes, or until the crust is a deep gold
brown and the apples are soft with browned edges. Remove from the oven and
allow to cool for at least 15 minutes before slicing and serving.
