Becca King is a girl with
many secrets. For one, she can hear peoples’ thoughts—she calls them
“whispers.” One day, she hears one of her stepfathers’ whispers, which reveals
to Becca that he’s plotting murder.
As soon as you can say
“bye-bye, Facebook,” Becca finds herself abandoned on a remote island off the
coast of Washington that’s filled with strangers, who all have their share of
secrets, too.
One
of these mysterious secret-keepers is Derric, a Ugandan orphan taken in by a
local family, with whom Becca creates a close bond. They
seem to be the only people who can help each other with their troubles. But
while Becca awaits her mother’s return with news of a new home—one far away
from her stepfather—Derric falls into a coma.
A
police investigation ensues, but there is little hope of finding out who put
him into the coma. Did the criminal attack Derric because of his secret? Will
Becca be able to listen to the whispers and help solve the case?
