Rock ‘n’ roller Lesley Gore recorded her hit single “You
Don’t Own Me” in 1964 when she was 17 years old. Then, it was a fiercely feminist
song that defended the rights of women to be themselves, to be free. Now, it’s
ringing the same bells it did half a century ago.
This time around, though, pop culture phenoms and girl power
patriots Lena Dunham, Alexa Chung, Mae Whitman and Tavi Gevinson are joining
forces with dozens of other girls and women to spread the word about women’s
rights…and the freedoms we enjoy now that could be taken away should the Mitt
Romney win the upcoming presidential election.
