How to turn your trash into treasure

Your annual closet clean-out doesn’t have to mean trash fest! It’s amazing how easy it is to totally transform unwanted junk into something good-as-new. Think before you toss, and try out these recycling tips before you kick your stuff to the curb.

Hit up the craft store

A little sparkle can go a long way. Head to your local arts and crafts place to find jewels, studs, and even ribbons. Use your creative design work to cover up stains, make cool patches, or just spice up an old t-shirt.

Web-spiration

When all else fails, Google! Check out artsy DIY sites like Pinterest and Instagram for the most creative, fun ways to save that old stuff. Here’s a few of our favorites:

That old corkboard you forgot to pin pictures to? Put it to use by turning it into a fashionable jewelry display and organizer. Simply arrange pushpins on the board and hang your bling up to show it off.

Don’t let that gorge pattern go to waste just because the shirt doesn’t fit you anymore. Use the fabric to make cool patterned tape by cutting the shirt into small strips and attaching them to one side of double-sided tape. Then use your crafty creation in place of regular tape for a pop of color and design.

If you like saving old pictures, postcards, and birthday cards but don’t know what to do with them, try this: For some wall art, glue these keepsakes to a large piece of foamcore and hang it on the wall for decorative memories.

Pass it on

If you do decide to give up on a thing or two, make sure it goes to someone in need. Donating last year’s wardrobe to organizations like Goodwill and Salvation Army help you clear out that closet while supporting a worthy cause. And for non-clothing items, check out this awesome list of places you can send your stuff to.
