My friend and I have been friends for almost two years. She invited me to her birthday party next weekend to see a movie and sleep over with her two dance friends. I've met one of them, and she's not mean to me, but she and my friend get all BFFy together and leave me out. I told my friend that I was fine with the party even though I'm really not.
Dear Friend Has New Friends,
Here's the thing: If you go to the party feeling hurt and mad and slighted, you won't have fun and that won't be good for anybody. But if you go with the attitude that you’re glad you got invited (instead of truly being left out) and you do your best to get to know the new girl, everyone will get along. Make a one-on-one plan with your friend too, and when you're together, don't just grumble, enjoy that time. In short, don't cross your arms in a huff when you can open them instead. While it can be hard when friends make other friends, in the big picture it means you'll have more interesting people in your life—and, by the way, you'll be making friends on your own too.
