Dear Carol

I think Mom is cheating on Dad. Do I want to know the truth?

I think my mom is cheating on my dad. I saw on my mom’s computer an e-mail from my mom saying “I love you” to a guy my dad hates. I love my dad and don’t want him to get hurt. I also saw that the guy had written, “It’s our one month anniversary.” That made me cry. Help!

Dear Wants to Know the Truth,

People say “Beware of what you wish for” because sometimes you may think you want to know the truth when in fact you don’t. Ideally, this situation will work itself out and your parents will find their way back to each other. It’s even possible you saw the evidence of a flirtation rather than a full-blown crisis. Do not ask your mom a point-blank question like “Are you having an affair?” Instead, if you want to bring up this subject, do so delicately and indirectly so that your conversation doesn’t involve lies or accusations. You can say, “Are you and Dad mad at each other?” Or you can ask an abstract question like “Do you think most marriages can survive affairs?” I hope things get resolved, and if not, remember that you are not alone and that your parents both love you and their problems are not your fault.
