Usually the most disappointing thing you’ll find in your pillowcase at the end of trick-or-treating is a toothbrush or one of the activity booklets. Even the packets of pretzels are good for refueling midway through your Halloween eve. But one Fargo, North Dakota, woman’s plan will surely ruin more than few children’s holidays. This year, she’ll be giving out candy, all right…except to kids she deems to be obese. Those kids will be handed out letters that read as follows:
“Happy Halloween and Happy Holidays Neighbor!
You are probably wondering why your child has this note;
have you ever heard the saying, ‘It takes a village to raise a child’? I am
disappointed in ‘the village’ of Fargo Moorhead, West Fargo.
Your child is, in my opinion, moderately obese and should
not be consuming sugar and treats to the extent of some children this Halloween
My hope is that you will step up as a parent and ration
candy this Halloween and not allow your child to continue these unhealthy
No, we’re not pulling your leg here. You can see of picture
of this letter right
here. It exists. This plan is most likely still gonna be carried out
come Halloween night. The woman herself has been interviewed by a local news
radio station, and she is pretty darn pleased with her approach.
While we appreciate that she wants to help the kids in her
community to live healthier lives, we aren’t to pleased with her tactic—after
all, how ostracized and ashamed will the children who receive those letters
feels? There are certainly better approaches to get kids (and parents) to eat
and live better, while still making them feel good about themselves.
Take these four, for
#1. Planting a veggie
co-op garden in your neighborhood
#2. Donating healthy
items to a food bank
#3. Giving out
good-for-you snacks on Halloween instead of candy
#4. Starting a
service club that will help bring fresh produce from your to inner cities and
What do you think of
this letter, and what would you do to help your community live better?
