Feel good Friday: Teen XC runner helps competitor cross the finish line

Sometimes it’s really tough to be a good sport. After all, putting in hours and hours of effort—not to mention the blood, sweat and tears—only to come in second or third or not to place at all is disappointing. But good sportsmanship, well, that’s something we wouldn’t trade for all the gold in the world. And one girl, Kayla Samuel of Achievement First Amistad High School in Connecticut, has it in spades.

She was competing in a cross-country race when she noticed another competitor limping along, just trying to make it across the finish line. That other girl, Maryn Valliancourt, had sprained her ankle earlier in the race, but was determined to finish. And so Kayla decided to help. She gave Maryn her arm so the girl could walk, and let her cross the finish line first.
