Ask Bill & Dave

My crush thinks I rejected him--now he blows me off!

My crush asked me to go to dinner and I was ecstatic. But I wasn’t able to go because I had a track meet. I know he likes me but now he's always blowing me off. I think he's still mad at me for not going to dinner, what should I do?

Dave: To a guy, rejection is rejection, regardless of what form it takes. What does a fella hear when you tell him you can’t go to the movies because you’ll be in in Stockholm attending the Nobel Prize Awards Ceremony (Mom won!) before rushing back for your grandfather’s funeral? He hears you say you don’t want to see “Drillbit Taylor” with him…and not because you think it’s a sucky movie. So your crush just wants you to experience a little taste of the same rejection he felt.

Bill: First, let's deconstruct this a little. Sounds like your BF went out on an emotional limb to set up a nice date, and he got rejected. Taking the emotional initiative isn’t easy for guys, so, however immature it may seem, his feelings are probably hurt. Time for you to take the initiative. Invite him out to dinner (make sure HE doesn’t have a track meet). Then tell him how much you appreciated his invitation, and you can’t wait till he asks you again. Make it safe for him to take an emotional chance.
