Lately, I've been talking to this boy via Facebook chat. No, he's not some random guy I met online. We met in third grade, and I've known him for five years. He messaged me once and we got into talking. I don't like-like him, because he likes my friend, who likes him back.
We were talking last night and he was telling me he felt hurt that one of his best friends was flirting with her. He and she are practically a couple, but they don't “go out.” Anyway, we talk often, for hours at a time, and everything seems cool. The only problem is when I see him in real life, he acts like he doesn't know me at all, like we never even met.
Dear Only Online,
You could confess online that you'd like to say hi in person. But wait, is this
the “only problem”? Maybe he’s silent in the hallways because he and your
friend are supposed to the hot item, not you two. All this heartfelt
communication may be fun, but you’re investing a lot of hours into a “friend,”
aren’t you? And why’s he telling you he’s hurt about the flirting when the two
of you are, let’s be honest, sort of flirting? This triangle won’t last
forever, and it might be time to decide whether the behind-the-scenes
conversations are working for you, or whether you should either step things up
at school or log off at home.
