Tressed Out: Help me style my super-long hair!

I have hair down to my butt. What can I do to style it?

Long locks don’t have to be worn down ‘n’ straight or in a pony. Here are a few fun ways to do up those super-sweeping strands.

Side Swept
This glamorous ’do is perfect for a night out. Part your hair on the side and pull back into a low ponytail at the base of your neck. Twist the ponytail while winding it into a bun. Hold in place with bobby pins. For added glitz, tuck in a flower pin or sparkly barrette just above the bun, behind your ear.

Tousled Pony
Ponytails are quick, easy and can be dressed up or down in a flash—our fave kind of style.

Gather hair into a pony that will sit in the middle of your head, just below the crown. Secure with an elastic, preferably one that matches your hair color. Grab a half-inch thick piece of hair from the bottom of the ponytail and wrap it around the elastic, tucking the end back under the elastic. Tousle your mane by finger-combing in some moose and loosely scrunching for a bed-head look. Back-comb your ponytail just a bit (a version of teasing) and finish with hairspray.

Fab Fishtail
Lucky girl, your length allows for more intricate braiding techniques, like fishtails. Here’s the how-to:

Divide your hair into two equal sections. Pull a thin section of hair from the outside of the left section, and add it to the right section. Do the same for the right side: pull a thin section from the outside of the right and add it to the left. Pull the hair tight. Keep repeating this process, alternating sides, and pulling the braid tight each time. To finish, secure the end of the braid with an elastic. Be sure to use the same thickness each time you grab a new section, or your braid will look uneven. This may take a bit of practice to get by yourself, so enlist a friend to help!

Presh Pigtails
Looking for a twist on pigtails? Try a pair of French braids (ask Mom for help!) to channel your inner Parisian. A pair of messy braids tied off with a ribbon is a sweet modern update for fall. Or, play around with your part! Forgo the usual straight up ‘n’ down for a zig-zag or side part with your ponies—way cool.
