Guess what hair trend is back: Crimping!

This gorgeous hair blast from the past is back and with an even bigger bang than before. It’s renowned for its boosting effect, giving even the limpest locks some “oomph.” But what’s the best way to pull this off without looking like you dressed up as Baby Spice for Halloween? Follow our easy tips, below. Happy crimping!

Getting started:

First of all, to get this look, there’s no need to have a real crimping iron *phew*. We’re going more for the tousled bedhead look, and less for the electrical-shock look. Simplicity is really the key, so settle in for some easy tips that can help you get this style in an instant.

You’ll need:

A comb to part your hair, a towel, hair ties (preferably smaller ones), a hair dryer and some ‘90s inspiration.

Step one:

After washing your hair, gently pat it with your towel and detangle. Make sure your hair stays damp—but not sopping. Dampness is a key element to achieving the crimps.

Step two:

Part your hair into small or large sections (depending on the size you want the crimps to be) and then braid your selected sections as tight as you can and fasten with some small hair ties. Previous looks show crimps that are smaller together, frizztastic, but recent re-production of the ‘80s and ‘90s craze has seen a change towards bigger crimps, which are more suited for all; a loose wave look.

To get Mary-Kate’s bedhead look, make the plaits slightly bigger.

Step three:

The best—and easiest—step: Simply, go to sleep. After your zzzs, you’ll awaken the next morning and take out each braid. Blow dry your locks for 5 min on a cool setting to lock the style in place and get rid of any remaining dampness.

Remember:

Do NOT brush your hair out; simply run your fingers through it or fluff it up a little. Enjoy your newly crimped hair!
