Exactly how to: 5 steps to a perfect blowout

We can all appreciate a good blowout: full volume, floppy-rounded ends (think totally glam Selena Gomez) and silky smooth texture. Seeing the results of an ah-mazing blowout after getting your hair trimmed always leaves us saying “I totally wish I could do that!” But don’t worry – we’ve got you covered! Grab your blow dryer and follow the instructions below to start blowin’ those locks to straight-up salon perfection.

What You’ll Need:

A good blow dryer

Heat protectant

A large rounded brush

Flexible hair spray

Large hair clip (alligator or butterfly style both work)

Step 1: Protect your hair
After washing your hair, apply a heat protectant product and anti-frizz serum. This will help guard your hair from excess heat and keep those flyaways down for good. Be sure to go easy on the serum though, a dime-sized pump should do the trick.

Step 2: Part those locks
Break up your hair into four different sections by splitting your hair down the middle and adding two sections on one side, then two on the other. This will help blow-drying a whole lot easier and will help dry your hair evenly. Use the clip to hold the other sections back while you work on one at a time. More on brush technique next…

Step 3: Use the right brush
If you don’t have the right brush, you’re wasting your time. Go for a ceramic large rounded brush—these babies work wonders (seriously). Point the blow dryer at your roots with your hair fully wrapped around the brush. Follow the brush with your dryer from root to end going forward towards your forehead. Continue doing this while flipping the brush and alternating sections of your hair forward and back. This will give you the ultimate voluminous and full look you crave.

Step 4: Patience is virtue
Remember, the perfect blowout takes time and lots of practice! Be sure to take your time and go over the same areas multiple times until you have mastered your perfect blowout look. If it means jamming to some good music while you’re at it to make the time go by, amp up that stereo (can we get some Lorde up in here?!)

Step 5: Bombshell finish
Now’s the time to add the finishing touch to your totally pro blowout. Wave goodbye to those flyaways and add a small amount of flexible hair spray to set your hair. If you need to pick up the volume and extend your blowout for another day, go for a light spritz of some dry shampoo to soak up excess oil.

TIP: If you’re saving your blowout for tomorrow, too, take a large hair clip and throw your hair up in a loose bun on the top of your head before hitting the sack.
