Fab up your beauty routine with a grain of salt

Salt is not just for your french fries anymore. Turns out, the household staple contains quite a lot of crucial nutrients that can do wonders for your skin, hair, teeth and even nails! Check out these six ah-mazing ways to start bringing the mineral into your everyday beauty routine.

Get beachy, wavy hair

Pulling off the beachy hair look is a great way to bring some sunshine into the cold winter months. Create a great simple spray by mixing sea salt, coconut oil, and water. Just put it in a spray bottle and spritz on wet hair to create the perfect waves. Pro tip: The more salt you use, the curlier your hair will be.

Clear up your skin

Ever notice how swimming in the ocean can make your skin a lot clearer? That's because sea salt is a natural antiseptic, helping to heal your complexion. If you have acne-prone skin, make a salt toner by filling a small spray bottle with warm water and adding 1 teaspoon of ground salt. Spritz the toner onto a cotton pad and apply onto your face after washing. Be sure to moisturize, though, or you risk drying out.

Banish flakes

Want to be saved from the embarrassment of having white flakes all over your sweater? Look no further–this easy salt treatment exfoliates your scalp and removes excess oil. All you have to do is warm 1 cup of water in a pan and stir in 3 tablespoons of table salt. Once the water cools down, rinse your scalp with the mixture and massage for 5-8 minutes before shampooing and conditioning as usual.

Whiten your nails

We all get yellowing or stained nails from time to time and let's face it –they look gross. Fix your nasty nails by mixing 1 teaspoon of lemon juice, 1 teaspoon of baking soda and 1 teaspoon of sea salt. Simply soak your nails for 10-20 minutes, then scrub them gently with a brush for terrific-looking tips.

Get fresh breath

Whether you’ve run out of Listerine or just wanna save some moolah, you can make mouthwash in your very own kitchen in seconds (seriously). Just mix together 1 teaspoon of salt, 1 teaspoon of baking soda and 1/2 cup of warm water. It’s just as effective as commercial mouthwashes at killing bacteria and it doesn’t contain any nasty chemicals.

Heal nasty breakouts

Salt is a natural exfoliant, perfect for scrubbing away dead cells to reveal smooth skin. A simple salt mask packs many nutrients that are vital to your skin’s health and can balance oil and speed up healing from breakouts. To make your own, just dissolve 1 teaspoon of salt in 3 teaspoons of warm water and mix it with 1 tablespoon of pure raw honey and 1 tablespoon of aloe vera gel. Gently apply the mixture to the face, making sure to avoid the eyes, and leave it on for 10-15 minutes. Rinse off with warm water and apply a non-comedogenic moisturizer for glowing skin.
