Trend alert! These gorgeous highlights will have you sprinting to the salon

This spring we're loving tortoiseshell highlights, the oh-so-subtle hue that's taking over the strands of models and celebs alike. The look is all about a super soft transition of color, that connects dark roots to much-lighter ends through a painted-on gradient. (Fun fact: the fancy 'n' French term for it is ecaille, so mention both to your stylist.)

The totally gorgeous technique works on blondes and brunettes, as it often incorporates caramel-y shades of both. Unlike traditional color, you don't have to refresh your roots very often. Our only warning? Be sure to bring in a pic when going the way of the tortoise—it's way more subtle than traditional ombre, and you don't want to get stuck with a style that's too dramatic for your taste.
