4 common eyeliner mistakes and how to fix them

We all have a love/hate relationship with eyeliner. Yeah, it can instantly transform your look and make those eyes pop, but more often than not, it never seems to turn out the way we want it to. Squiggly cat eye? Raccoon eyes? Ugh. We’ve all been there. Ahead, some tips on avoiding the most common eyeliner faux pas.

1. Lining waterline in black on the daily

How to fix it: Instead of lining your waterline with a black pencil, opt for a white or nude shade. This will brighten up your look, make your eyes look bigger and give the illusion that you didn’t stay up all night studying (or, ya know, binge-watching PLL.)

2. Going overboard with bottom liner

How to fix it: A dark eye look can look totally chic, but too much black leaves you looking tired and a little Gothic. Next time you try out a smoky look, opt for a brown liner instead of a black for big, bold eyes that’ll dazzle.

3. Applying top-lid liner unevenly

How to fix it: Liquid liner can def be intimidating, especially if you’re an eyeliner newbie. But there are a couple ways you can perfect that sleek, lined look: 1. Take your time! If you’ve only got 5 minutes to do your makeup, trying to fire off the perfect cat-eye will only end in disaster. 2. Practice makes perfect. Line your top line in pencil before using a gel or liquid liner for a super helpful guideline.

4. Not smudge-proofing

How to fix it: Smudged eyeliner is the worst. To prevent a smudged line, apply your liner and let it dry, then go over the line with a thin, angled brush covered in powder eye shadow. Voila! That line isn’t going anywhere.
