Beware the online prom dress disaster

Prom dresses are not the cheapest of clothing out there, and prom expenses can rack up all too quickly and easily—especially if your school doesn’t provide a dinner along with the dance. So it makes sense that when girls are finding their dream dresses online for super reasonable prices, they are snatching them up right away. But for some girls ordering online, it's not working out.

When Alabamian 17-year-old Alivia Briggs found a pink mermaid dress on a site called Allanhu, she fell in love with it. She'd seen similar dresses elsewhere, but they were always out of her price range. At Allanhu, the dress was $223, which she found to be more reasonable. But once the dress arrived, it looked totally different from the posting.

The same thing happened to a Colorado teen, 17-year-old Juliet Jacoby, who bought her dress online for $35 when the $149 original was out of her budget.

Though Alivia was able to borrow a dress from a friend and Juliet had ordered a backup dress (and got a good laugh out of the situation), many other girls have shared similar stories and are sending out their unfortunate (but sometimes hilarious) prom dress photos to warn other internet users to be careful what they buy. Online shopping can be easier and more convenient than going to the mall, but it's important to be know where you're purchasing from—and that you trust the site.

It's easy to steal photos of the real deal and use them for a fake listing, so make sure to do your research reading reviews, both for the dress and the site. And if you're still not sure? Well, maybe it's time ot hit the mall after all.
