Here's how you can celebrate International Day of the Girl

In a world where it seems that male voices are more important than women’s, it can be difficult to speak up and voice your opinion about things that matter to you. Today is about making your voice heard because it matters.

Today, it’s the International Day of the Girl! International Day of the Girl is all about helping fight for your rights and your voice with girl-led activism across the country. The United Nations created this holiday in 2012 to highlight the potential of girls around the world and speak about issues that threaten their well-being. That’s why it’s so important for you to get involved by celebrating the day because you’re an expert on the issues that affect you.

There are many ways to get involved and celebrate today. Here are just a few:

1. Go to an International Day of the Girl Event
Today, there are many events all over the country, where you can get involved and get a better understanding of how to fight for social justice. If you want to go to one, ask your mom or a woman that you look up to if they can take you to one. The Day of the Girl website has a ton listed.

2. Start an event of your own
Make an event at your school, gather your friends after school or even at home, where you can sit and educate each other on social issues.

3. Talk about it on social media
If your parents let you use social media, post a tweet or Instagram post about why your voice should be heard. Use the hashtag #DayOfTheGirl to amplify your message. It’ll basically be a “girl takeover” all over the world!

4. Volunteer
If your school has a club based on helping girls in need, join it! If not, ask a teacher for help in starting a brand new club. You can even join the Girl Scouts that do some amazing things for your peers. However you'd like to help, do it and you could be helping another girl achieve her dreams.

5. Start a conversation
You probably have an opinion on issues that affect you, so why not speak to another girl, boy or anyone else that’ll listen? It’ll be interesting to learn more about what your peers think about this day.
