18 things you need to know about the hotties of Divergent

One of this year’s most anticipated movies is hitting the big screen March 21—and we couldn’t be more excited. We were lucky enough to head to Chicago last spring and watch some of Veronica Roth’s hit dystopian read Divergent transform into a movie. And not only did we get to check out some of the ah-mazing sets like the Prior house and The Pit, we also got a chance to chat with the movie’s super talented (and super cute!) stars.

What did we discover about the group of dudes set to become household names once this film storms towards theaters? Read on to find out!

    Meet…Ansel Elgort

    Who plays: Caleb Prior

Ansel was hanging in his New York City home with his friend when he got the call that he landed the role of Divergent protagonist Tris’ older brother Caleb. “I remember it clearly: It was a rainy day and we both freaked out—like the typical way they do in the movies where they jump up and yell,” he says. What else do you need to know about Ansel?

He’s a family guy. “I think Caleb is very righteous. He always views [things as] what’s right for the world. I’m different. I think I’m righteous and I fight for what’s right, but I get suckered into like the human connection and I probably wouldn’t be able to do the kind of thing’s he’s done, to his family, to my sister, you know?”

He’s itching for The Great White Way. “I started in musical theater, so a dream role of mine is Javert in Les Mis on Broadway. I can’t wait to be old enough.”

He’s a sucker for classics. “I like The Grapes of Wrath (by John Steinbeck) and The Lord of the Rings (by J. R. R. Tolkien). The Grapes of Wrath because it’s real gritty and The Lord of the Rings because it’s a big epic. I think that’s what I [also] like about Divergent—it’s an epic tale that stands for something else besides what’s really on the surface.”

    Meet…Theo James

    Who plays: Four

One look at the real-life Four and we get why Tris can’t get this Dauntless leader out of her head. What else do we dig about this sporty stunner?

He’s a boxer and brings his athletic skills to the screen. “There’s a great move at one point where someone goes to punch me in the head and I use my head to deflect his hand. It’s kind of efficient and aggressive.”

He didn’t dive deep into Veronica Roth’s books before the film. “I made an active choice not to. I didn’t want to be too influenced by other material and wanted to bring my own take [on Four] to the table.”

He’s pensive. “Four thinks before he speaks, and I think I’m like that, too. And I suppose I share my more introverted side with him in some respects.”

  • 3jai.jpg

    Meet…Jai Courtney

    Who plays: Eric

The makeup department works magic. When chatting with Jai while in full costume, we were a little intimidated by the pierced and tatt’d harsh Dauntless leader. Beyond the wardrobe, though, this cutie is super sweet. There are a few other things you need to know about the star…

He’s Australian. “I’ve done a couple of jobs now where I’ve had to [do an American accent] so it’s gotten easier. But there’s always a dialogue coach to keep me on track.”

He likes playing a movie villain. “It can be fun. I mean you certainly get to do things that you probably otherwise wouldn’t really agree with.”

He has a need for speed. “Right now, [I’m obsessed with] vintage Japanese motorcycles.”

  • 4miles.jpg

    Meet…Miles Teller

    Who plays: Peter

Fresh off his role as playing Shailene Woodley’s love interest in Spectacular Now, Miles was more than willing to team up with Shai once again—this time as a nagging tough guy.

He originally tried out for Four. “I auditioned for Four and then I didn’t hear anything for like a year. Then the directors said, ‘How do you feel about the part of Eric?’ I didn’t think that was going to work because Eric needs to be intimidating. So then they said, ‘Take a look at the role of Peter.’ I had just worked with Shailene where she played my girlfriend, so I thought it would be nice to play this guy who’s kind of a bully to her.”

He gets girls. “I have two older sisters, so I know that relationship when a [guy] keeps on annoying a girl. I understand it.”

He knows how to relax. “I love to be lazy. I have an extremely hard work ethic, but when I’m not working, I like to just hang out. The California weather’s so nice, taking drives while listening to the radio with the window open is one of my favorite things.”

  • 5ben.jpg

    Meet…Ben Lloyd-Hughes

    Who plays: Will

Talk about a British invasion. This cutie knows how to lay on the charm! Playing Tris’ close bud Will in Divergent, we wouldn’t mind being buds with Ben in real life. Here’s why…

He’s a mama’s boy. “The reason why I was so attracted to the script and story is because I’ve always been obsessed with that idea of bravery. My mother is one of the bravest people I know. She’s a single mom of four kids, but she’s done some of the bravest things I’ve ever seen.”

He’s a football (soccer to us Americans) fanatic. “I’m a big Queens Park Rangers fan and when I was traveling in Asia, I booked an appointment for a Queens Park Rangers tattoo. In another life, I actually went to the appointment and didn’t sleep through it.”

He’s a foodie. What was Ben’s favorite Divergent scene to film? “When we all sit down to eat and Tris eats hamburgers for the first time. It was a really fun scene because I felt like it had a lot of spirit. There were so many extras [there] and a lot of stuff going on. Plus, I always enjoy eating”

  • 6christian.jpg

    Meet…Christian Madsen

    Who plays: Al

Who was the first person Christian told when he found out he landed the part of the clumsy and quiet Al? His apartment manager! “I rand down three flights of stairs and was like, ‘Hey, I’m going to get my rent paid!’” he jokes. Admitting he connects with Al on many levels, there are a few other things you need to know about this soft-spoken star.

He’s a bookworm. “I really like reading. I read Divergent [and then] bought other books that are similar, like A Fighter’s Heart by Sam Sheridan.”

He’s royalty…or at least would like to be. “I would [like to play] the prince in The Little Prince.”

He’s humble. “I never thought that something like [landing Divergent] would happen to me. I’ve been like a kid, it’s so exciting.”
