Veronica Roth (author of the Divergent book series) gave them some insight

“We met a few times over dinner to pick her brain. We talked about where her ideas came from, how she believes Four changes and develops as a person and what kind of character she envisioned before she even began writing.” – Theo James / Four

“I was like, ‘What’s this guy’s deal?’ I was just curious to see her take on [Peter]. Veronica said, ‘Have fun playing Peter—my weirdest character.’” – Miles Teller / Peter

Most of the tattoos you’ll see are fake…and took a long time to make

“[Four’s tattoo] of the faction symbols with this spine that goes down the back is this beautiful piece of work. It took about two and a half hours to put on.” – Theo James / Four

Many met for boot camp before filming even began

“We came about a month before [filming]. The concept was to create a fighting style that was new [and what you] might see in the future. I had to get the boxing out of my system, so that was helpful for me. And then we had all the key extras come in for two days like it was the beginning of initiation and I kind of acted like a Dauntless leader. I’d take them on a run, through a fitness regime and I’d through the stance. That was fun.” – Theo James / Four

“The most physical thing I’d done was Footloose, which was dancing, so I was looking foreword to just doing some fight training. We were working pretty hard, and [boot camp] was pretty strict. Like if [our trainer] saw someone with a candy bar or piece of cake, they’d have to like 50 push ups.” – Miles Teller / Peter

The whole cast was in on one mega prank against Ben Lloyd-Hughes

“Shay [Woodley] worked with George Clooney, so we’re hanging out on set and she is saying, ‘Oh my gosh, Clooney is such a prankster.’ This Grinch smile started on me and Miles [Teller’s] faces and we were like, we should probably prank someone. We decided to fill Ben [Lloyd-Hughes’] trailer with balloons and a card that read, ‘It was so good to meet you, Ben. Hopefully we can talk soon. Here’s my number’ and signed it Veronica [Roth]. The next day, Ben comes over to me and Miles with his phone and said, ‘Veronica left me a note and I texted this number and said, ‘Hi Veronica, let me know if you want to chat about Will.’ [In all actuality] he was texting someone else. The plan was to drag this out until the premiere and then tell him but…” – Christian Madsen / Al

“…I finally realized that I was the butt of all jokes and went home very sad.” – Ben Lloyd-Hughes / Will

    The cast bonded over basketball

“We’d play a lot downstairs at our apartment complex and have like one-on-one tournaments and stuff. I beat Miles Teller pretty bad but Christian Madsen beat me a few times.” – Ansel Elgort / Caleb

And many hit up the farmer’s market whenever they could

“To be honest, the coolest thing I [did in Chicago] was the farmer’s market. It’s huge! They have all sorts of fun things.” – Shailene Woodley / Tris
