Tween fights back after school kicks her off football team

Maddy Paige, 12, loves playing football, and was on the team at her private Christian school for one super successful season as the defensive tackle. The fans loved her and cheered her on like one of the boys. That was all until this week when school officials released a new rule, stating that male and female students cannot play on the same sports teams. Among other reasons, school officials stated they were worried having Maddy and others girls play on coed teams would force the boys to think indecent thoughts.

Maddy and her parents think their decision to kick her off because she’s a girl is outrageous. They believe it to be keeping males and females from being equal, calling the policy “misguided” and “anachronistic.” Maddy’s mom says that ability and not gender should determine if her daughter makes the team.

After hearing what her school had to say and thinking about her options, Maddy decided to switch to homeschooling and play football in the regional leagues, as opposed to school leagues. Even though she’s absolutely heartbroken about her former school’s decision, she’s still a football fanatic and will do whatever she can to play the game. In the meantime, she’s fighting to level the playing field between girls and guys. And we’ll be cheering her on long after the first kick-off of the season.

What do you think? Should Maddy and other girls be able to play football with the guys, whether or not there’s another girls team they could play on?
