Toy company busts through the pink ceiling to get girls building


Debbie Sterling didn’t know what engineering was until her high school math teacher suggested she check it out. And even then, she had no clue what being a train conductor had to do with her love for math and science.

Fast forward to right this second, and Debbie is the CEO of GoldieBlox, a toy company that creates inventive engineering playthings for girls. Her goal? To “disrupt the pink aisle.”

We know that men greatly outnumber women in science, technology, engineering and math fields (STEM), but did you know some girls lose interests in these stereotypically boyish area as early as age 8? And with most of the toys in the “pink aisle” being of the Barbie doll and tutu ilk—not that there’s anything wrong with dolls and tutus!—we can’t exactly blame them. A little diversity might just go a long way to even the score.
