Feel Good Friday: The sweetest story of how this unlikely duo became BFFs

Thumper and Bambi. Pooh and Pigglet. Bear and Hare. Interspecies buddies have long captured our hearts, but it’s when they happen in real life that we instantly melt into a puddle of goop. Enter, Penny and Roo, a duo so unusual with a story that’s just as achingly sweet.

That big ol’ pile of fluff you see is Penny, a silkie chicken with a heart bigger than her fuzzy coat. When she’s not laying eggs behind desks at her home at the rescue center (seriously), she’s hanging out with her best friend Roo, a disabled Chihuahua missing his two front legs.

Their friendship began when Alicia Williams, a receptionist at Duluth Animal Hospital, picked up Penny from an animal testing site. Unsure of what to do with her feathered friend, Williams’ colleagues recommended bringing her to the rescue center. There, Penny would be surrounded by a social circle, a natural habitat for flocking birds.

As fate would have it, someone brought in Roo after finding him in a ditch. He, like Penny, was in need of a best friend. The duo hit it off. Their bond became so strong that Penny sat on Roo like an egg while he was sleeping (again, seriously). Even with Internet stardom and hoards of visiting fans, they’re still as close as ever with their friendship growing daily.
