These high school students honored the memory of their friend in a super special way

On Monday August 24th, Morristown West High School lost their Superman. Jonathan Fluker, a bright 17-year-old known for his warmth and kindness, passed away after a battle with cancer. After being diagnosed in 2009, Jonathan didn’t let the bad news get the best of him. In an interview with CNN, his best friend Lyric McCarroll shared, “He never stopped smiling and he never stopped putting a smile on my face. Even when I was full of negativity, he would reassure me that he was never going to leave me. I said to him, 'You're my Superman, you're always going to be my Superman because you have the strength to get through this. I know you'll keep fighting and you won't give up.'"

Jonathan's “Superman” nickname had stuck (he even wore a Superman t-shirt to prom under his tuxedo) and, after learning about his death, students from the high school began working on a tribute for the young man. Football was a big part of Jonathan's life—he still attended games and practice as often as he could despite being unable to attend school full time. This past Friday night's game, Jonathan's friends and classmates from Morristown West decided to honor his memory by filling the students' section in the crowd and wearing Superman t-shirts and costumes. CNN even reported that the students bought all of the Superman merchandise that the near-by Walmarts had. Classmate Emily Campbell told Tennessee's WATE, "[Jonathan] was like the hero of our school. He was always just so nice and he brightened everyone's day."

Before the kickoff of the game, a banner with Fluker’s name and jersey number was carried onto the field and a special video tribute was played on the jumbotron. According to CNN, an estimated 6,000 people gathered at the game to honor him. And to make things even sweeter, Morristown West’s football team, the Trojans, beat the Greeneville Devils 28-3. Lamar Brown, MWHS's football head coach, shared, "It was a very special night, it's been an emotional time for our team and the school community. He's in a better place now; he's not suffering anymore and we're grateful for that."

Though we're saddened by the news of Jonathan's passing, we're inspired by his story and so touched by how his friends and school celebrated his life. Watch CNN's whole featurette here.
