New MA Menu Labeling Rules

Before you bite into that Big Mac, let us ask you a question: do you know anything about its nutrition facts—like the fact that it’s a whopping 540 calories? We didn’t think so…and neither do the members of the Massachusetts Public Health Council! That’s why they’ve just passed a new set of regulations that require all restaurants that have 20 or more locations in the state to post the calories in each item on their menu boards.

Why are they making such a fuss about fast food? Because it’s so bad for you. In the battle against obesity, knowledge is a great weapon…wouldn’t you think twice if you saw how many calories are in that small order of fries? (230, in case you were wondering.) These new rules, which will take effect November 1, 2010, will make people aware of just what they’re consuming.

Massachusetts isn’t the first state to approve regulations like this (California was), but this set of rules is the strictest yet! Not only do restaurants have to post the info inside, they also have to put it in their drive-through menus. According to Judy Grant, the campaign director for a group that advocates healthy foods, 65% of fast food purchases are made at the drive-through window. That means posting the calories there is super important—with the facts only posted inside, the majority of customers don’t get the info they need to make healthier decisions.

Blog it out: Do you like to indulge in fast food? Would having the calorie counts posted on the menu affect what you order? Do you think it’s fair that restaurants have to follow these regulations?
