Must List

We saw 5 Seconds of Summer live and here's what happened!

When we found out that the boys of 5 Seconds of Summer were performing close to the GL HQ, we knew we had to go. Not familiar with the guys? They’re a pop-rock band from Sydney, Australia made up of Luke, Calum, Michael and Ashton. The band opened up for One Direction last year on the Take Me Home tour and just released their EP She Looks So Perfect this spring, which topped the charts not only in their home country of Australia but in England and the US, too!

The cuties are wrapping up their first North American headline tour (which, by the way, sold out in a mere five minutes) before hitting the road with 1D again as openers on their Where We Are 2014 World Tour. And judging by what we just saw at their recent stop in Maryland, this summer is going to be h-o-t thanks to these cuties.

Unexpected Beginning

When we arrived at The Fillmore in Silver Spring, Maryland at 4:30 p.m. this past Monday, we were shocked at how many girls were already lined up for the 8 p.m. show. The line was wrapped around the entire block and there were still three hours until doors opened. We knew the band was big, but we had no idea how big their fan base was or how dedicated they were!

Fan 101

We found some diehards who spent hours just to get a glimpse of the guys. Like Isabella H., 17, who was the first to line up for the concert…at 7 p,m. Sunday night. What’s even crazier is that she admitted she stayed home from school the day tix went on sale to make sure she got some. And while we don’t recommend skipping class for any reason, we totally admire her dedication.

Then there’s Emily B. and Grace F., both 14, who came all the way from South Carolina to Maryland just to see their favorite band play.

After asking tons of girls what made them gaga over 5SOS, the general consensus was that it was the boys’ raw talent and personalities that drew everyone in.

“They haven’t let the fame get to their heads,” Madelyn L., 14, told us. “ They’re not like other bands. They’re real people to us.”

An opener like no other

Jackson Guthy was the opening act for the guys and he def got the crowd wild and ready for the rest of the show. He played our fave tune “Young and Single” and every time Jackson mentioned 5SOS, the entire venue erupted in screams. After a quick set change and some stellar music to jam out to, it was finally time for the Australian cuties to take the stage.

The main event

The Setlist: “Try Hard,” “Out of My Limits,” “Don’t Stop,” “Heartache on the Big Screen,” “Lost Boy,” “Amnesia,” “Beside You,” “Disconnected,” “Heartbreak Girl,” “Teenage Dream,” “Good Girls Are Bad Girls,” “She Looks So Perfect.”

The moment Ashton came running out, the crowd released an ear-splitting scream that would continue on throughout the night. There was a perfect mix of the boys playing their hits and having some fun interaction with the crowd. Luke was quick to point out that Michael was eating gummy bears on stage, for example, which resulted in Michael throwing his snacks into the audience.

The boys seemed so comfortable and really looked like they were having the time of their lives. And we totally heart that they took a break from singing to address some real issues (like tackling all of those Internet rumors about them), reminding us that, while out-of-this-world cute, they’re humans too. Michael was quick to say “We’ll be playing music until the day we die” and we were so happy to hear that they’re not letting any negativity get to them.

Along with their own songs, the cuties also sang their cover of Katy Perry’s “Teenage Dream” and closed out the show with an amazing performance of their mega-hit “She Looks So Perfect.”

Even though the concert ended way too soon in our opinion, we left knowing that it wouldn’t be the last time we’ll be seeing this band. 5 Seconds of Summer totally proved themselves and has made it known that they are a force to be reckoned with. From super dedicated fans to amazing songs combined with their adorable personalities, this band has the total package. We can’t wait to see what these boys do next!
