Got your pen ready? It's National Novel Writing Month!

Ah, November. The month of Thanksgiving, fall leaves and football games—and, most importantly, National Novel Writing Month

National Novel Writing Month, known as NaNoWriMo for short, is a month-long event that kicks off at midnight November 1st and extends until 11:59 p.m. on November 30th during which participants attempt to write their own 50,000-word novel. According to the website, NaNoWriMo.org, the challenge is for "anyone who has ever thought about writing a novel" and values "enthusiasm, determination, and a deadline." Writers of all experience levels are encouraged to join in—and if 50K words seems like a little much with your busy schedule (trust us, we get it), there's even a Young Writers Program where you can choose your own word count goals to reach.

Ready to get inspired? All month long, grab a warm cup of hot chocolate, your best pen (or your laptop) and all the creativity you can muster, because NaNoWriMo is helping you turn your best ideas into bestsellers. Join in online to track your word count, conspire with other aspiring authors and even take on cool dares from the dare machine (like including an unexplained weather phenomenon in the next couple pages of your project!).

Still need some more inspiration? Check out some of these popular novels penned in and inspired by past NaNoWriMos.

  • The Night We Said Yes by Lauren Gibaldi
  • Olivia Bean, Trivia Queen by Donna Gephart
  • Fangirl by Rainbow Rowell
  • Taking the Rein by Jessica Burkhart
  • Cinder, Scarlet and Cress by Marissa Meyer

Ready? Write on, GL girls.
