Advice

Rumor has it my BF wants to dump me. Should I believe the gossip?

People have been coming up to me in school and saying that my boyfriend is going to break up with me. But I don’t know if I should believe them, because when his older brother asked him he said no. But I hung out with my BF not too long ago and he would have broken up with me then. I don’t know what to do. Please help!

Hey girl! That does not sound like any fun. It can be hard to be surrounded by gossip and not really knowing what’s going on. But, we’re here to help. Here’s how to handle this sitch.

As tempting as it may be, you should never believe rumors without solid evidence. The only person whose word you should take is your boyfriend’s. If it’s not coming directly from him, how could anyone else possibly know what he’s thinking? Someone could have very easily made this up just to stir up drama. Don’t play into what everyone is saying and start worrying while it could all be false.

If you’re feeling way too worried though, address you boyfriend—calmly—about the rumors. When you talk to him, don’t accuse him of anything or hint that you think any of it could be remotely true. Even try joking around about it to see if he has a reaction. If you come across like you’re alleging him of wanting to break up with you when he wasn’t planning on it, it might actually push him to. Simply bring up what you’ve been hearing and let him guide the conversation from there.
