Sweet cinnamon apples

Kick off the start of the season with a quintessential fall dish. This recipe for cinnamon apples is one of my family's favorites, whether I serve it up as a side dish, as dessert, or as a soul-warming snack.

Ingredients:

4 large red apples of any variety (the juicier, the better!)

½ cup of brown sugar, packed

1 teaspoon of ground cinnamon

¼ teaspoon of ground nutmeg

2 tablespoons of butter

Directions:

Wash the apples and then cut them into bite-size pieces. Place the 2 tablespoons of butter in a saucepan over medium-low heat. Once the pan is warm, add in the apples, brown sugar, cinnamon and nutmeg. Combine well and stir occasionally. Leave the mixture simmering in the pan until the apples are pipin’ hot and cooked through. You can let it stew on the stove if you like, which will let the brown sugar sauce thicken, or you can dish it up right away.

Mix it up:

If you’d like a little variety, try substituting pears in for some (or all) of your apples. Delish!
Fan of apple pie? Instead of the cinnamon and nutmeg, season your apples with 1 teaspoon of apple pie spice, one of my personal faves. It's a mixture of cinnamon, nutmeg, allspice and cardamom.
