Eat Right

Hands off that hotdog! Do you know what's going on your bun?

We all know hotdogs aren’t the epitome of health food. They’re a special occasion thing, a backyard BBQ, family reunion, running wild with all your cousins and neighborhood buds as the sun sets on a perfect summer day sort of meal.

But, sigh, the bad news is they aren’t getting any better for you. In fact, a recent review says they just might be getting—gulp—worse.

The World Cancer Research Fund, hollyleehealth.com reports, just finished surveying 7,000 clinical studies linking what you eat to cancer. And they’ve decided that processed meats, like bologna, sausage, sandwich meat, beef jerky and our beloved hotdogs are too dangerous to consume.

The problem stems from two additives, sodium nitrate, which gives them that fresh red color, and monosodium glutamate (MSG), which enhances the flavor. Both have been linked to pretty nasty consequences, from colorectal and pancreatic cancer to neurological disorders, obesity and Alzheimer’s disease.

There is some good news, though. Thanks to the upswing in consumer consciousness, responsible brands have been shying away from these sorts of additives. Do your bod a favor and hit the store with Mom and Dad this Memorial Day Weekend and look for all-natural products. Big-time pluses on the label? Nitrate- and MSG-free goodies!
