4 fab things about being left-handed

For years, doctors tried to convert lefties into righties, punishing them for doing what came naturally—writing, drawing, even playing catch with their left hand instead of their right. Nowadays we’ve come to see the light, and we’re feelin’ the love for our left-handed hunnies. Here are 4 reasons you totally rock:

You’re pretty unique. Experts estimate that only 10 percent of the population is left-handed. Ambidextrous? Welcome to the 1 percent!

Chances are you’re wicked creative. While studies have debunked the myth that lefties are smarter than righties—we’re all equally brilliant, babes!—there is some evidence that shows that left-handers are better at what’s called divergent thinking, or developing new concepts from existing knowledge, the Wall Street Journal reports.

You’re helping scientists understand the brain. Because the way the brain operates in lefties is different from the way it works in righties, scientists are taking note and beginning to research the pathways that can lead to mental disorders like ADHD, schizophrenia and mood disorders.

You’re in really, really good company. Six of the last 12 presidents are left-handed (including Barack Obama, Bill Clinton and George H.W. Bush!). Historical figures Joan of Arc and Queen Victoria were left handed, as were Helen Keller and Judy Garland. Modern-day lefties include Oprah, Julia Roberts and Justin Bieber.

Are you a lefty? Represent!
