Proof winter is the worst: Apparently that steaming mug of hot cocoa is making you colder
According to the Huffington Post, when you sip something hot, whether it’s hot chocolate, tea, cider, coffee or something else, traitorous nerve receptors in your tongue tell your brain that something warm is coming, so it needs to compensate to keep your body temperature stable. (Apparently your tongue doesn’t get that you are two sips away from freezing your booty off.) So what does your brain do? It activates your bod’s cooling mechanisms and makes you start sweating. Which, when you’re wearing five thousand layers on a freezing cold day, leaves you rather chillier than you were before.
Sigh. We just can’t win. And if we can’t win, we might as well drown our sorrows in hot chocolate. Extra marshmallows, please, and don’t be stingy on the whip.
One more thing: Consuming a cold drink might actually warm you up, as it causes your blood vessels to tighten. Guess that’s good news for all the slushy lovers out there, eh?
