How to get through allergy season without feeling (and looking) awful
#1. Clean it up
Dust is perhaps one of the most common allergens, so make life easy on yourself and eliminate as much of it as you can. Regularly wipe down surfaces in your room, moving the things on your dresser and desk to get it all up, wash your sheets and pillow cases every week or two in warm water and vacuum rugs and carpets. If you know pollen is an issue for ya, avoid bringing cut flowers into your room, too.
#2. Keep 'em closed
Running around outside is fine and dandy, but keeping your windows open, especially at night, invites pollen into your room where it'll sneak up on you while you're studying and sleeping. Yes, it's nice outside, but if you want a dash of fresh air, sit on the front steps for a bit and keep your bedroom window latched.
#3 Wash up
If you've been handling anything dusty or been romping outside among bushes, trees and flowers, be sure to scrub your hands with soap and warm water frequently. You might not realize it, but every time you touch your face after being around an allergen, you're transferring those allergens to your nose and mouth, making it way easier for your body to start reacting to them.
#4 Pamper yourself,
Runny nose? Try a Neti Pot treatment. Itchy eyes? Toss on a cool compress to relieve 'em. Sore throat? Drink tea with honey. Too much nose-blowing? Moisturize, moisturize, moisturize! Treating your body well when you're not feeling so great will keep you looking fabulous, making you more confident and happy while ya recover.
#5. Act fast
There are lots of medications on the market that will stop allergy symptoms in their tracks, but you have to start taking them when you first feel them coming on. Talk to your doctor about the right one to try, and be sure to consider the symptoms you have and the side effects you can deal with. Trust us, meds that make ya drowsy are so not a good idea come 7 a.m.
