What to do when you unexpectedly get your period in public

We've all been there: you're out to lunch, when suddenly, something feels a little...off. Or you're at the beach and you just *know* that your period has arrived. Here's how to deal with a surprise period, no matter where you are.

Find the nearest bathroom
You need to assess the situation, and see if it really is a big problem, or if it’s not as bad as you initially thought. Excuse yourself and head over to the nearest bathroom, to see what's going on.

Getting supplies or lack thereof
Ideally, you'd carry supplies with you for surprise periods, but that's not always true. Here are your options:
1. If you're with friends or your mom, ask them and see if they have a tampon or pad you can use.
2. If you’re at school, go to the nurse, and they’ll have supplies.
3. Check if the public bathroom has a feminine hygiene product vending machine. If not, try asking someone else in the bathroom. We all help each other out during these times!
4. Find a convenience store nearby where you can buy supplies.
5. If all else fails, you’ll have to make yourself a makeshift pad with toilet paper or napkins until you can get more supplies. Trust me, we’ve all been there, and it’s not that bad.
Tie a sweatshirt around your waist
If you have a sweatshirt or a sweater, tying it around your waist is a great way to feel more comfortable and secure if you’re afraid of bleeding through.

Keep your calm
This happens to everyone. I’m sure every girl (and woman) can think of a surprise period experience they’ve had. So don’t panic and remember that at some point you’ll be able to get to supplies. You’re not alone, sis.

Track your period
If you’re really worried about having this happen to or have already had a horror experience, track your period on an app, so you know when it's coming. There are lots of different options, so keep looking until you find one you like.

Remember: surprise periods happen. If you’re ever in this situation the most important thing is to keep your cool and take care of yourself. Don't be afraid to speak up and ask for help.
