My bestie is super religious...but I'm not
My best friend is Christian and I am no religion. Not atheist, but rather religion-neutral. All my best friend wants to do is talk about why I believe what I do and then watch these videos that go against evolution and such, but I don’t want to do any of that. I just want religion to be a topic we don’t discuss. I tried talking to her about this, but she said she can’t make the deal we don’t talk about our contrasting views. What can I do to save our friendship and not talk about our beliefs?
Dear Frustrating Friendship,
When one person wants to talk nonstop about religion or politics or money or her vacation or new puppy, it’s understandable that the other person wants to change the channel—or get out the remote and press mute. In this case, maybe you can say, “Look, we’re never going to change each others’ minds, so let’s agree to disagree. I’m tired of talking about it.” If she can’t let go, you may have to let her go. I’m all for having friends with different beliefs and points of view, but it sounds like she doesn’t want a respectful back-and-forth conversation, she wants to convert you. And that’s proselytizing, not friendship.
