Dear Carol

"Dear Carol, I want to lose weight"

Dear Carol,
I am 13 and think I may be overweight. But every time I try to go on a diet, I end up eating junk food. I try to exercise, but I get sidetracked. All my friends are skinny, and I’d love to be skinny, too. But I never lose weight. Any tips?
— I Want To Lose Weight

Dear I Want To Lose Weight,
It’s commendable that you want to be healthier, but let’s not aim for “skinny.” We all have different body types, and I doubt all your friends are skinny any more than they’re all tall or short. That said, becoming fit is a sensible and attainable goal, as is feeling good about your body—so *yay* you. What kind of physical activity appeals to you? Walking? Jogging? Swimming? Group sports? The point is to move. Can you eat more fruits and veggies, and fewer unhealthy snacks? Can you drink more water? For me, the easiest way to lay off the chips and cookies is not to buy them in the first place. Keep grapes, celery, baby carrots and sugarless gum on hand. And give yourself props for taking care of your one and only body.
