LIFE

Dear Carol

"Dear Carol, online school is kicking my butt!"

Dear Carol,

Online school is really hard because we are all figuring it out as we go along. It’s stressful, but every time I go to take a break, my mom tells me to get back to work. And on top of that, my math teacher isn’t much help with the homework, and that’s the subject I need the most assistance with. I’m drowning in schoolwork!

-Trying My Best

Dear Trying My Best,

My heart goes out to all students right now. School is hard enough even when you are *not* staring at a screen for hours every day. Tell your mom as calmly as possible that you are doing your best and sometimes you need a break. Add, “I know this pandemic has been stressful for parents too, and I appreciate everything you’ve been doing for me.” (Compliments and compassion can go a long way.) As for math, is there a friend/sibling/cousin/ neighbor who can come to the rescue? You can also find free math tutorials online, so search for a helpful one. Or try reaching out to your teacher directly for a one-on-one tutoring session. I think you deserve a big (virtual) high-five for trying your best. And thank heavens the holidays are around the corner—we all deserve a break!
