Dear Carol

Sick of socializing? How to turn down invites...nicely

Two friends of mine call me every day to ask me over. Most of the time I don't want to, so I make up excuses. Now I am running out of excuses, and I don't know if I should tell them the truth. I don't want to hurt their feelings. Please help

Dear Sick of Friends Calling:

It's nice to be in demand, but it sounds as if enough is enough. Next time a friend calls, instead of pretending you can't join her, say, " I don't feel like going out today, but how about if I come over on Thursday?"  Or try, "I always have a great time with you, but I'm in the mood to stay in and read right now."  You're entitled to some down time all by yourself-and even the closest of friends can sometimes use a little distance.
