7 financially friendly hangout ideas

If you've noticed a rise in prices for just about everything lately, you're not alone. It's no secret that inflation is on the rise, making basically everything super pricey. And, tbh, it's something that affects us all—it can even impact how often you go out with friends. Let's face it: From brunches to mall trips with the gals, outings with your buds can get pricey pretty quickly. That's why we're here with seven stellar hangout ideas. The best part? You'll barely have to spend a penny on these sweet memories. Your wallet will *so* be thanking you later.

1. Hike

@hailey.presser

Hiking is a healthy, Insta-worthy and super fun activity to do with friends. Seeing amazing new sights while having deep convos with your besties? Yes, pls! And if you go to a free local park, it'll be super sweet for your wallet too.

2. Watch the sunset

@marymargaretboud

If you're anything like us, you can never say no to a pretty sunset! Set a date with your crew (when the weather forecast is looking good, ofc) to sit at a park or in someone's backyard. After all, nature's art is the best art.

3. Pack your own picnic

@irisapatow

We're here to tell you that yes, it *is* possible to have one of those picnics that are all over your Pinterest without paying for a fancy meal. You can pack a basket of foods and snacks that you already have at home and would eat anyway (think: PB & J, anyone?). Simply pick a pretty spot at a park or under your fave tree, set down an old sheet or blanket and enjoy!

4. Go to the library

@annicanns

Reminder: You *don't* need to pay 30 bucks for a book just to keep up with the trending titles on BookTok. With tons of books lining the shelves, libraries are the ultimate spot for romanticizing reading. There's nothing like browsing lots of free books with friends. For an added challenge, have your besties pick out the perfect books for each other!

5. Game night

Nope, you don't need to pay for a movie to have an exciting evening with your squad. Those random (yet super fun) games collecting dust on the shelf? Time to put 'em to good use. And don't forget to tell your friends to bring their fave games too! It'll make for a night filled with nostalgia and fun.

6. Stargazing

Stargazing can make for endless excitement. Set a blanket (or lounge chairs) outside on a clear night, and just look up to enjoy the bright lights and deep convos. And if you're feeling extra? Try to memorize some of the stars and constellations beforehand. You'll be sure to impress your squad (and, if you're lucky, you may even see a planet like Jupiter or Saturn!). We heart the Night Sky app for identifying everything up above.

7. Clothing swap

Yup, we're obsessed with thrifting, but even the prices of second-hand shops can add up after a while. Lo and behold: a clothing swap! All you'll have to do for this activity is go through some of your clothes to find a few items that you no longer wear. Instead of throwing them out, bring them to your next squad hangout (and make sure that all of your friends bring a few cute items too). Then, swap the items with each other for an experience that feels just like thrifting but is totally free.
